Unit 4—Teaching new language explores 3 methods of ESA to teach vocabulary, grammar and functions It is not the only way to teach vocabulary with “straight arrow “ESA, or to be approached with “boomerang” ESA or “patchwork” ESA. How to teach vocabulary, grammar and functions is most appropriate to the class and the language will be explained A new language consists of vocabulary, grammar(language structures) and language functions. Vocabulary is essential to the students and especially at the early stages when students are motivate to learn the basic words they need to get by the language. Vocabulary is as important as bricks or stones for building a brick and stone house. Grammar is like the foundation and structure of the building, without knowledge of a language grammar is the same as a building without a solid foundation. Language functions can be considered as the design and plan of building a house, without a design or plan, we really don’t know how the building is going to build and what it is going to look like. And pronunciation and intonation is like the decoration of a building. So when teachers are going to teach a new language ,they should select the vocabulary guided by the course and teachers’ book which is appropriated to
the students and the task ,and it should be followed by Teachability and Frequency and coverage. And the teachers should teach the students the pronunciation, meaning, spelling, usage, interaction ,grammar and language functions. So the students can form the sentence structures with the vocabularies they are learning or they have learnt. When teachers teach grammar, they should teach the meaning ,use ,forms and patterns and the difference between spoken and written form. Language functions refer to the purpose in which we use language to communicate. We use language for a variety of formal, informal, tentative, technical, etc. Language functions including “inviting, refusing; accepting and rejecting; agreeing and disagreeing;suggesting;compare and contrast, asking questions, expressing likes and dislike..” For example, when a teacher is teaching “compare and contrast”, he/she can show the students the words such as similar, taller, smallest, so teachers might teach comparative adjectives and give some example sentences. For some instances: He is taller than me. This is the smallest apple in the basket. In addition to functional vocabulary, grammatical structures are associated with each language function.", In this unit I learnt the students should be introduced
to new language in a balanced and manageable way. We can apply ESA method to introduce new language .This unit shows us three methods that are very useful. But an effective teacher will think about which structure is most appropriate to the class and the language that will be introduced. This unit shows us how to select vocabulary
