The teacher's attitude is one of the most important aspects of a lesson, and was one of the defining differences between the videos. In the first video the teacher is very serious and strict. He never smiles and seems generally disagreeable. Most of the rest of the problems in the lesson stem from this. For example, instructions are short, quickly-spoken, and involve technical TEFL terms (modal auxiliary verbs) without explanation or demonstration/examples. This only serves to confuse the students and discourages them from answering questions. He also tells the students repeatedly how easy the task is and how “everyone knows it,” further discouraging them from answering for fear of being wrong and apparently the only person who doesn't understand. The first lesson also lacks an engage phase, the teacher jumps right to demanding the students tell him what modal auxiliary verbs are without warming them up. In the second lesson the teacher is very friendly and smiles nearly the entire time. Because of the teacher’s attitude, the students are much more willing to participate in class even if they make mistakes. The use of the engage phase activity allows the students to gain confidence by starting with a topic they understand and can produce answers about quickly. The teacher
also makes himself available to answer questions during the study and activate phases rather than reading a book. For the activate phase the teacher makes the objective clear by showing an example he produced himself.
