This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit is about the second half of the four basic language skills: speaking and writing. In general, writing tends to be neglected in the TEFL world because it requires a greater degree of accuracy while speaking tends to require a greater fluency. Part of making lessons successful in the productive end is to know the difference between accuracy and fluency. In accuracy we concentrate on producing correct language while in fluency its about the effectiveness and flow of communication in language. When planning our lessons out we want to use accuracy during the study stage and fluency during the activate phase. There are different types of activities that teachers can implement for speaking. We can use controlled activities that are lead by the teacher and promote accuracy such as drilling or prompting. When drilling we should use the 3 x3 rule which repeats a word three times followed by picking out three separate individuals for drills. Guided activities also promote accuracy but the output is controlled by the teacher while the exact language isnÂ’t. These activities include model dialogues or guided role-playing. For fluency, we have creative communication activities, which are scenarios that teachers set up but students get to experiment creatively with the
language. They can be activities such as discussions, debates, simulations, etc.. With speech we are asking students to participate by speaking up. Some students may have trouble doing this because they lack of confidence, fear of making mistakes, are intimidated by their peers, arenÂ’t into the topic, etcÂ… Whatever the reason it may be, as teachers we have to encourage them to interact. Setting them in pairs, groups, providing examples, explaining the purpose of activities or changing classroom dynamics are strategies we can get them to participate. Sometimes its because they need more time to think about the activity too. When planning for these lessons we have to be mindful of what our goals are and try to predict what will happen. Everything should be prepared such as materials, instructions and how much time they need. During the lesson we have to make use of visual aids and remind students of the particular language structure or vocabulary to use. Its important to emphasize the process over the product and we should always monitor the activity but without being intrusive. When we are done and ready for feedback, we should let them know how well they did by participating. We should keep in the back of our heads the mistakes and errors that could improve
our studentsÂ’ language skills. If thereÂ’s a common error we should tell them but wait until a future class to practice it. If itÂ’s just an individual, we can talk to them privately about how they can fix it. Writing can be complicated as we are dealing with many variables that can cause some confusion. Spelling can be difficult to master since many words sound alike but are spelt differently. They can also spell the same yet be read differently as well. ThereÂ’s even the difference in spelling between the British and Americans that have to be considered. These can be dealt with in time through exposure of different texts. Students will find that there are differences in style as well depending on the medium it is written in. No matter what though we should continue to encourage them to write, especially creatively through poetry, stories, or plays. And finally, if penmanship becomes a problem, we should address them but we shouldnÂ’t try to get them all to conform their handwriting, just enough to be legible. As teachers, we should always find a way to make it fun to keep our students motivated. We can use games and adapt them for language whether they are competitive or co-operative. Some games are already geared towards language and some institutions
might even already have them. ", Within reading this unit i learnt about the difference between fluency and accuracy and their importances. Furthermore i understood what to incorporate into a basic lesson plan in order to help improve a students writing skills. It was really interesting to read about how to create an environment in order to make students feel comfortable to speak english. I enjoyed learning about and understanding different activities
