This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Unit twelve covered the other skills that are involved when teaching and learning a foreign language, the productive skills, which are speaking and writing. These are essential skills because it allows for proper communication in the language. I can understand how it can seem that writing in the skills that the TEFL community neglects the most since teachers may not like to use it as much in the classroom due to the fact that it is ‘quiet time.’ Homework is the easy way for students to have practice with writing, but that can backfire since not all of the students complete their homework assignments. If they do not do their homework, then their writing skills do not develop further. Writing might be more difficult for learners since it requires precision and accuracy while speaking requires more fluency with less time to think and plan one’s answers. We teachers must remember to create the desire and need for the students’ to communicate otherwise it will probably seem to them like a waste of time. It’s helpful for me to learn the breakdown of the levels of speaking activities, those controlled by the teacher (drilling and prompting), guided by the teacher (model dialogues and role-plays), and creative communication (free role-play, information gap, debates and
more). From what I noticed when teaching EFL to middle school students was that they need a lot of encouragement to speak English aloud. It was one of the more difficult aspects for me as a teacher, which I hope to work on a lot. The creative speaking lesson about weather forecasts, in the ESA format, is a good example of how to have them work in pairs and complete a forecast of a country that another pair suggested. The steps to follow when creating and running a creative speaking activity are varied, which will be good. In this way, the teacher evaluation form will be handy in order to jot notes and evaluate how well the students are relating to the material. In order to provide good feedback I like the idea of audio recording the lesson so it can be played back to the students. It would probably be a good idea to get the studentsÂ’ permission and the schoolÂ’s permission before making the recording. Highlighting the things that were done well is always a good idea when giving feedback to students. The mistakes that are common for most of the students should be mentioned and then properly prepared for a future class. Writing lessons, while sometimes quite different from speaking, does still share some of the same elements of a speaking lesson. Spelling will be very difficult
for learners of EFL because it is already quite difficult for native English speakers. I have seen this over the years in the emails, text messages, and letters that I have received from native English speaking family and friends. It might be really surprising for a non-native English speaker to see so many errors! While the German language is very precise with pronunciation following the spelling of words, the English language is much trickier. The same spelling can often be pronounced differently or the different spelling of words can be pronounced the same. I realize that I am lucky to not have to learn EFL as an adult. The creative writing activity lesson, writing speech bubbles in cartoons, would be a good lesson for learners of all ages. Younger students would especially enjoy this. The pair work and use of reading out loud during the activity phase is a good idea. It will likely be easier for students to speak aloud when they are in pairs, so the entire focus is not on one individual. I always enjoy learning new games to use in the classroom. There seem to be a countless number on the web and in books. ItÂ’s often a good idea to ask other EFL teachers what they have found useful in their classrooms, especially if they are teaching the same level and class size as you.
