In this unit we saw two class demonstrations, the first of which was a negative model. In that one, the teacher looked unhappy while looking at the students, didn't use gestures or mime, paced around the room, and looked around the room and away from the students as they did worksheets silently. In the engage phase, he repeated a grammatical term without explaining it, writing examples on the board (or saying them), and repeatedly told them it was an easy concept, implying they were inept for not being able to answer his questions. Instead, a teacher must encourage students emotionally and elicit the answers in various ways. In the second demonstration class, his demeanor was friendly and he engaged students after introducing himself. He had passed out papers for them to write their names, and then he called on them by name throughout the class (out of order, so as to stimulate their attention). After they were done with the first worksheets, he asked each pair how many they had written, and encouraged those who had written many with his tone of voice. After writing many of the names of animals they'd written on their worksheets on the board, he several times elicited more animal names using verbal descriptions and miming. Before he passed out each worksheet or asked them
to draw an imaginary animal, he carefully explained what they were supposed to do, speaking more slowly and clearly than in the first video, and then told them how much time they would have. When one student had trouble with pronunciation, and then again when a student spoke too softly, the teacher said "thank you"" after understanding them. This seems important to do
