The tense system: The future is one of the most complex areas of the English language. So many different tenses and ideas can be used with future meanings. The 7 most common are as follows” 1, The future simple I will pick you up later. 2, The future continuous: I’ll be getting on the train at five PM. 3, The future perfect I’ll have finished my exams by Monday. 4, The future perfect continuous: He’ll have been driving for two hours before he reaches Paris. 5, Be going + infinitive: It’s going to rain later. 6, The Present Simple: The train leaves platform five in ten minutes. 7, The present continuous I’m meeting her for coffee tomorrow. USAGES OF THE FUTURE PERFECT: “Future facts and certainties”. “Promises, predictions, assumptions/speculations, spontaneous decisions, threats”. FUTURE CONTINUOUS, form: subject + will + be + verb + ing (present participle). Ex: We will be waiting for you. I won’t be wearing a dress. USAGES OF THE FUTURE CONTINUOUS: “1, To say that something will be in progress at a particular moment in the future: This time tomorrow I will be lying on a beach. 2, the future continuous is used to predict the present to say what we think or guess might be happening now: John will probably be having lunch now. 3, the
future continuous is used for polite enquiries referring to other people’s plans, but not to influence the listener’s intention. EX: Will you be coming to the party? The future continuous is used to refer to future events which are fixed or decided (without suggesting personal intention) EX: Professor Smith will be giving another lecture at the same time next week”. FUTURE PERFECT form: will + have + past participle Example of future perfect: I will have worked here for 2 years. USAGE OF THE FUTURE PERFECT: The Future perfect tense is used to say that something will have been done, completed or achieved by a certain time in the future. EX: of Future perfect; EX: The builder says he’ll have finished the roof by Monday. The perfect structures are all relative. In the case of the future perfect, we look back on the past (a completed action) from a future standpoint. That is ‘past in the future”. “A sentence with the future perfect generally uses an adverbial expression that signals when a future event will be completed. EX: By the end of the summer I will have completed this course. FUTURE PERFECT CONTINUOUS: FORM: will + have + been + verb + ing. EX: I will have been working for seven years. Usage: We can use the future perfect continuous to say how long
something will have continued by a certain time. EX: By the time you get here, IÂ’ll have been working for six hours. Compare this to the future perfect tense. What general rule could be applied to the teaching of the 2 forms? The future perfect continuous often includes an adverbial expression that begins with by. For example By next week I will receive my money.
