When performing lesson planning teachers should take into consideration different factors that can influence the effectiveness of the lesson. The teacher should make sure that the lessons don't become too rigid or teacher centred. Lesson planning can be a very good aid to more inexperienced teachers if they are asked to provide their own course material. They can plan a clear structure to their lessons including all of the areas of content, which they will teach to the students throughout the course. When lesson plans are written they provide some important functions to the structure of the lesson. An aid to planning When a teacher writes down what they want the students to achieve during the lesson and uses it as a reference within the lesson itself. A working document This allows the teacher to follow the tasks that have been designed on the plan to the timescale that is set. It is important that the teacher can have some flexibility with the guideline as some lesson activities can overrun or be finished sooner than planned. A record A teacher can use any lesson plans that have been completed to act as a record for what has already been taught on a course. Lesson plans can then be organised and used for the following course of students. Changes can then be made to any
unsuccessful activities. When writing lesson plans different elements need to be included in the plan. Such as the following :- Learner objectives Personal aims Context relating to its place and them Teaching aids and materials Anticipated problems for the teacher and the students Procedure of the activities used The correct phase - Engage, activate or study The timing of each activity Interaction - s-s, t-s or students working alone The number of students in the class The level of the class Date and time of the lesson Names of teachers and observers Lesson plans can provide an excellent guideline for teachers throughout their teaching career. Teachers should also be flexible when following the lesson plan and allow for any changes that benefit the flow of the lesson. Used wisely they are a very important tool for a teacher to use throughout their career. Some schools however may prefer for the teacher to use a specific coursebook limiting the teacher's usage of lesson plans. Therefore they may not be able to be used as frequently by every teacher in the ESL classroom, but when they are used they can be extremely useful.
