This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
The teacher carries a confident personality and clarity in his voice. However, he seems to be scowling and constantly unhappy. He starts the class by introducing and briefly explaining model auxiliary verbs; however, he opines repeatedly that these verbs are easy. It may be so to him but this could create a fear of making mistakes in the students. It does not put the students at ease in so that they learn at their optimum abilities. The students are most likely Asians and they tend to be reserved and hardly participative as seen in the first lesson. His speech contains a level of expectation and an eventual disappointment in the first lesson. He goes on to provide answers and explanations after some time to the students. The painful sound his marker makes against the whiteboard should have kept the students awake even though it was ear-unfriendly to viewers of this particular video. Some students warm up during the engage phase only when initiated with an example. Perhaps his scowling look or sighs of possible disappointment is due to discouraging response from the students who simply sit unresponsive in the first lesson. The teacher does not seem patient in trying to understand a studentÂ’s query but this may be due to a limited class time. While the students are in their study
phase, the teacher should keep teacher-talking time minimum as it may divide studentsÂ’ attentions. When students face difficulties with can/canÂ’t whenever they do not recognize the subjects mentioned such as a walrus. The class becomes more responsive only when they are familiar with the subject such as an elephant. The teacher was readily available to answer any question during the same phase. In the last lesson, the teacher instructs students to draw an animal and what it can or canÂ’t do. Maybe, the teacher should have spoken slowly and clearly as the students seemed hesitant in the activate stage. As mentioned ahead, education in Asian countries have been dictatorial where the teachers stood as authoritative figures and the students were at the receiving end only. The lesson were, thus, highly spoon-fed or initiated discouraging participative behaviours similar to the Unit 10 video.", This unit offered two videos of class lessons. In one lesson the teacher did a poor job teaching the students and in the other the teacher did a far better job at teaching the students. It was very helpful to see both the lesson and contrast them. It highlighted the differences between effective and ineffective teachers
