Unit 8 describes the ways Future Tense can be expressed in English language. Here are the different possibilities: Future simple (Shall or Will) • Affirmative - shall / will + verb • Negative - shall not / will not + verb • Question - shall I / Will you + verb • Negative Question - shall I not / will you not • Contractions - shan’t / won’t, I’ll / you’ll Future continuous subject + will + be + verb + ‘ing’ (present participle) • Affirmative - We will be running with you. • Yes / No Questions - Will you be joining us for lunch ? • Negatives - She will not be wearing a coat. Future perfect will + have + verb (past participle) • Affirmative - I will have taught here for 3 years. • Yes / No Questions - Will you have taught here for 4 years ? • Negative - I will not have taught here for 3 years. Future perfect continuous will + have + been + verb + ‘ing’ • Affirmative - I will have been talking on the phone for 30 minutes. • Yes / No Questions - Have you been talking on the phone for an hour. • Negative - I will not have been talking for an hour. ‘Going to’ future Verb ‘to be’ in the Present + going to + Base form of verb or Be Going + Infinitive (‘going to’ future)
• Affirmative - We are going to fly to Hawaii next month. • Yes / No Questions - Are we going to fly to Hawaii next month? • Negative - We are not going to fly to Hawaii next month. USAGE Future simple • Future facts and certainties • Promises • Predictions – no evidence (as opposed to ‘be going to’) • Assumptions / Speculation • Spontaneous decisions (‘be going to’ – planned decisions) • Threats Future continuous • To say that something will be in progress at a particular moment in the future • To ‘predict the present’, to say what we think or guess might be happening now • For polite inquires referring to other people’s plans, but NOT to influence the listeners • Intentions • To refer to future events which are fixed or decided (lacks personal intentions) Future perfect • the future • Used to say that something will have been done, completed, or archived by a certain time in • To look back on the past (a completed action) from a future standpoint. • The past in the future • Usually contains an adverbial phrase which signals when a future event will be completed Future perfect continuous • To say how long something will have continued by a certain time • Usually
contains an adverbial phrase which begins with ‘BY’ ‘Going to’ future • Intentions • Predictions based on present evidence • Plans (decisions made BEFORE speaking) Present simple • When discussing a timetable or a fixed plan • To talk about the future after words like ' 'when', 'until', 'after', 'before' and 'as soon as' in a future sentence • To suggest a more formal situation • To suggest a more impersonal tone Present simple continuous • For definite arrangements (with a future time word) • For decisions and plans without a time frame
