This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
There are four basic skills involved in learning a language: reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Receptive skills are reading and listening, and productive skills are speaking and writing. All are equally important and should be included in every ESL lesson to create a learning balance. Receptive skills, reading and listening, are done either for a purpose or for entertainment. They are done individually or simultaneously. Reading and listening skills not only employ recognition and understanding, but also use pre-existing knowledge of the world in order to predict content, scan for specific information, skim for general ideas, look for detailed information, and deduce from context. Problems connected with teaching and learning these skills include sentence length, word length, and unfamiliar words. As readers may read the text many times, listening does not permit the time to deduce meaning because the listener may only hear it once. By pre-teaching vocabulary, the essential words that might create obstacles, the teacher can help students grasp the general idea without having to know every word. By carefully non-authentic texts, students will be able to gain confidence in their skills. Also, topics should be chosen , as well as dialogues, to motivate the students.
They have to be interesting, and should cover all the students' interests over a period of time. The teacher must get to know the students and their interests. By using visual prompts, predictions, and generally impacting the students at the engage stage, students will be interested in learning from that point on. Comprehension tasks are an important feature in teaching receptive skills. These tasks should promote understanding, and not just checking understanding. It should also be realistically achievable.
