This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
The objective of this unit was to introduce us to the two productive skills – writing and speaking. Writing is the most difficult skill that requires a higher level of accuracy, whereas speaking on the other hand requires a greater degree of fluency. Accuracy and fluency are different and their main differences are outlined as follows. Accuracy is usually part of the study phase and concentrates on producing correct language as compared to fluency which is a part of the activate phase and concentrates on allowing students to experiment and be creative with the language. They are both equally important in any lesson. Moreover, I learnt that speaking activities in the classroom can be classified within controlled activities (drilling and prompting), guided activities (guided role-play and model dialogues) and creative communication (discussions, debates, simulations, communication games etc). Usually students may be unwilling to participate in the classroom and this could be for a variety of reasons: 1. Fear of making mistakes 2. Cultural reasons 3. Lack of interest in the topic 4. Previous learning experiences and so on. Teachers could use different techniques to encourage interaction with the students and some examples of these techniques are: 1. pair work, 2. group
work, 3. changing the class dynamics, 4. careful planning, 5. making speaking activities purposeful and 6. allowing students time to think about what they are going to say etc. I also explored through the guidelines for a successful creative speaking activity and one of which included ways that a teacher could generate the students’ interest in a topic – it could be through visuals, taking a short lead in a talk, newspaper headline, trying to relate the topic to students’ own interests and experiences. I also learnt that writing is different as compared to speaking and involves teaching and a deep understanding of the following skills: 1. Grammar 2. Vocabulary 3. Spelling 4. Handwriting 5. Layout 6. Punctuation Games could also be adapted to language teaching as these would aid in students learning and understanding of concepts. I learnt that they are of two types of games– competitive and co-operative. Some examples of traditional games that could be used within a classroom include noughts and crosses, hangman, twister, snakes and ladders, jeopardy, crosswords, Pictionary, tongue twisters etc.", This unit introduced how to teach productive skills - speaking and writing. There was a focus on the difference between accuracy and fluency
