Writing lesson plans has a number of important functions: it provides an aid to planning, a working document and a record of what a class has done and which materials have been used. The following principles is associated with the basics of lesson planning: Keep it simple because you may need to refer to it during a lesson, structure it and maintain the same structure, write the anticipated time for each activity in the margin, check for balance of skills, and keep it flexible and open to adaptation. There are a number of things you can do to make sure your lesson goes smoothly: check that you have your lesson plan, run through your lesson plan and make sure you have all the necessary aids and materials needed, check if the equipment works, lay out materials and aids so that you can easily find them, arrange the seating, make sure that the board is clean, and be ready to chat to the students as they come into class. The following pieces of information may be included in a lesson plan: learner objectives, personal aims, context, teaching aids, anticipated problems for you and your students, procedure, phase, timing, interaction, class level, number of students, date/time, and the names of the teacher and observer. A good teacher will want to monitor the quality of his/her own lessons.
The teacher can evaluate his/her own lessons and make notes of what went well and where the lesson could have been improved. When planning a sequence of lessons, a number of issues should be considered: flexibility, goals, revision, variety and balance.
