This unit addresses the usefulness of using a lesson plan and what to consider in its preparation and execution. Lesson planning is not mandatory and even considered by some to thwart spontaneity and natural language acquisition. However, preparing and having a record of lesson plans greatly assists the teacher in being organised and efficient for her students. A plan is a working document that keeps the teacher on task and creates an historical record that can be referred to later by herself, or other teachers/employer. Having a record of what has been taught and when (discussions, drills, and worksheets, etc) can later avoid redundancies, or ideas on what should be reinforced. Plans must be simple and structured, first noting pertinent info about class make up/size/level, learner/personal aims/objectives and anticipated learner/personal problems/solutions. context (theme), (reminder of) equipment/materials, etc. Next follows the teacher's procedure , making note of steps/activities for each E, S, and A stage, required/anticipated duration of time for same, and desired level of student/teacher interaction. Using a form for a follow up self evaluation is useful to determine how well the teacher achieved the objectives of student and self, whether anticipated problems occurred
and if so whether her solutions worked, the effectiveness of each step within each Engage, Study, and Activate phase, identifying overall strengths/weaknesses in order to improve next time. A single lesson plan can become one of a sequence of lessons, wherein the flexible teacher can avoid redundancies, update lessons, modify aims/objectives, etc towards a longer-term set of learning/teaching goals. Such goals can also serve to motivate the teacher to progress and the students to anticipate feedback, as in through weekly tests or occasional revision sessions. On this note, frequent mini-revisions are mandatory to aid students to retain and use already-learned language. In planning a sequence of lessons the teacher must keep in mind the need to address all learning skills areas with a good variety of materials. ", Lesson plan takes more time to make
