Whatever the level of experience a teacher has, a lesson plan is good practice and imperative for the novice teacher. Lesson plans can be singular documents, but are most effective when part of a larger unit. Each lesson within the unit has an objective for the students. That objective then provides the base for a lesson. A lesson plan provides context and ensures that any required teaching aids are thought of in advance of the lesson. During the creation of the lesson plan, the teacher will consider any anticipated problems and potential solutions. The teacher needs to carefully plan the procedures used so that they are appropriate for the student and for the objective. Each of the phases in the procedure will have activities associated with them and estimated times for each of the activities should be recorded. The teacher needs to plan who will be interacting at each stage of the lesson and this often predicates the time that the stage will require. Lessons will vary according to the level of the student and their age. Younger students have shorter attention spans and require more student activity. A class at a beginner level may require more teacher activity. When one is planning a lesson, one must be cognizant of the class size and the room size. At the conclusion
of the lesson, the teacher should note at the end of the lesson plan, notes on which parts of lesson plan were effective and which areas of the lesson may need review at a later date. The date of the lesson should be included on the lesson plan for historical purposes.
