Unit 11 discusses teaching receptive skills. The four basic skills in language are reading and listening(receptive skills) and speaking and writing(productive skills). They are equally important. Unit 11 focuses on receptive skills. There are two main reasons that motivate a person to read and listen. They include a specific purpose and for entertainment. When we read and listen it is necessary that we use special skills. While some people may think that we only need our eyes and ears to do this, the use of our minds is fundamental as well. By using our minds, we use the preexisting knowledge that we have gained through time. Readers and listeners use a variety of skills to obtain information. They include predictive skills, scanning, skimming, detailed information, and deduction. Predictive skills allow readers to predict the idea of the text. Sometimes we scan the text to find the specific information we are interested in. Skimming is used to gain a general idea of the content without reading it word for word. Sometimes we need to gather detailed information that requires a high amount of focused attention. to absorb the important details. When using deduction we must be able to deduce from the context a certain meaning. When teaching receptive skills a number of potential problems
may occur. The most problematic are is language. Certain factors can present problems to learners of English such as word length, sentence length, and the use of unknown words. Some solutions that should be applied when approaching language difficulties are pre-teaching vocabulary, a careful selection of texts, the topic, creating interest, and using comprehension tasks. By pre-teaching vocabulary we help remove some obstacles that students might experience. It is a good idea to pre-teach words that are necessary for understanding. By carefully selecting the texts we use we can expose our students to various different topics. It is a good idea to use non-authentic texts because they contain language that is more appropriate to the students abilities. When selecting authentic texts more attention is needed. The focus should be on what the students know and not on what they don't. The voice of topic can determine whether or not a teacher can engage the class. It serves as motivation to keep interest high. It is important that the teacher know the students interests. Topics should vary in order to keep the interests of all students. By creating interest the teacher gets the class motivated to do the tasks. By showing pictures, having discussions, and predicting the content, the class
becomes willing to participate during the engage phase. Comprehension tasks play an important role when teaching receptive skills because they promote understanding. Some activities may include jigsaw reading and reading jumbled texts. Unit 11 provides examples of lesson plans used when teaching receptive skills. I find the examples to be very helpful. Being a new teacher, I feel that I am still learning how to organize my ideas into a format that can work in a classroom setting. I find the material provided to be very helpful.
