In this unit we faced the issue of teaching productive skills, e.g speaking and writing. We have also faced two notions such as accuracy and fluency and we've been lucky to find out the difference between these two concepts. The importance of accuracy and fluency was established as well - both are equally important. Talking about 'speaking activities in the classroom', we've been presented with the following breakdown: 1. Controlled activities (drilling and prompting); 2. Guided activities (model dialogues and guided role-play); 3. Creative communication (free role-play, discussions, information gap, debates, simulations and communication games). How to encourage students, which technique to use, was the next stage of this unit. I found out why some students seem reluctant to speak in the classroom and how to avoid such situations in future. Moreover, some guidelines for creative speaking activity, including before the lesson, during activity and after activity stages were brought to my attention and I may say that these instructions are extremely helpful, especially for an inexperienced teacher. Talking about writing skills, we've been given an explanation regarding difference between written text and speaking, e.g differences in grammar, vocabulary and the most important in spelling,
layout and punctuation. As for games in the classroom, we've been given several links where we can find all necessary explanation regarding this or that game. Overall, this unit helped me finally understand the main differences between receptive and productive skills, explaining some approaches in teaching speaking and writing.
