the unit talks about the receptive skills which are extremely important for the student to get a firm grasp of the language . as illustrated in the unit ,in our daily life we have our motives and reasons for listening and reading. i read a novel for entertainment ,I read a newspaper to get an idea about what is going on in the world ,I listen to instructions for guide or to learn something I listen to music to entertain myself .we have a mix of motives behind reading and listening . when we read and listen, our eyes and ears are not enough as we must function our minds to get a comprehensive understanding of the content .this understanding fluctuates between full ,medium according to our expertise and the skills we use. Some use prediction to work out the content from headline or introduction , some are looking for specific details and give their full concentration . others for a general idea or deduction .students in the classroom experience difficulties in receptive skills if they are not fully exposed to the language.there are ways to help them get over the difficulties to increase their confidence in understanding oral and written language , when the teacher chooses a materiel for his students to read or listen .he should explain to them difficult words to make it easier
for them to understand .the teacher should give consideration to careful selection of the texts based on the students ability .there are authentic texts for students with true skills and non-authentic texts suited for the students’ abilities . the teacher could also help his students get fully engaged in the material by choosing interesting topics that pick their interest . if the student is not motivated and interested , his receptive skills would be minimal and not good enough .the teacher should also use clever strategies to develop the student ‘s comprehension skills ,for example the jigsaw activity , the teacher seats the students in pairs and allow them to read the text and share informations .there is an effective outline for receptive skills lesson (patchwork ) structure. Initially, The teachers engages the students in the lesson by showing them an extract of an interview or a song of a celebrity and then increase their interest in it by asking them the question , what do you know about him ? .in the first study phase , the teacher gives the students a definition of difficult vocabulary to help them understand better .in the second study phase , the teacher gets the students to answer the comprehension tasks based on the text for example to answer
false and true questions .in the first activate phase , the teacher gets the student to write a biography about the celebrity based on what he has learnt from the text . in the second activate phase , the teacher gets the students to write a biography about a celebrity they know or interested in ,each pair reads out and other classmates try to guess which famous person it was .this is an overview about the important strategies the teacher should take into consideration in order to develop and improve the student receptive skills .
