There are two productive skills -- speaking and writing. Both of them are equally important and serve the same purpose -- to communicate. Writing is more difficult (and sometimes neglected) skill focused on accuracy and usually is a part of the study phase. Speaking is more focused on fluency and usually is a part of an activate phase of the lesson. Speaking activities in the classroom can be divided into three categories: controlled activities (drilling and prompting), guided activities(guided role-play and dialogs) and creative communication (free role-play, debates and discussions, information gap, communication game etc.) The teacher should know basic reasons that can stop some students from participating in the classroom speaking activities. It can be for cultural reasons or peer intimidation, fear to make mistakes or previous negative learning experience, lack of interest in the topic or mere lack of confidence. The teacher must try to overcome indicated obstacles and to encourage all students to speak by creating a comfortable environment. There are some ways to encourage students' interaction: pair and group work, practice and enough time to think before fluency activities, careful planning of the lesson making speaking activities purposeful, if needed -- changing the classroom
dynamics etc. Also it is very important to provide a positive feedback to all students and especially to reluctant ones. In writing skills very important are a proper grammar, vocabulary, spelling and also handwriting and punctuation. Creative writing (stories, poems and plays) plus different types of writing games (co-operative and competitive) will make studying more interesting and exciting.
