This unit is mainly focusing on the receptive skills – reading and listening. Basically, purpose and entertainment can be identified and classified as two different categories in terms of the motives for reading and listening. It sometimes can be a mix of the two motives. Also, there are some useful skills can be applied when readers and listeners are having problem for both reading and listening, namely, predictive skills, scanning, skimming, detailed information and deduction from the context. Each of them has different functions which are used to deal with those potential reading and listening issues. Moreover, some potential problems with listening and reading need to be addressed, such as the language, the text, the topic and the tasks that the students will perform. The most important thing that I have learnt is how to well apply these receptive skills into the ESA teaching methodology. For instance, using authentic reading and listening materials for lower level of students will more likely stop them from building their confidence with receptive skills during the study phase of a receptive skills lesson. Also, teachers should use a variety of topics to equally cater for all interests when choosing the topic of a text or dialogue during an ESA lesson. Therefore, get to
