This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
In this lesson we explored the nuances and techniques associated with teaching receptive skills. Receptive skills, specifically reading and writing, engage a number of different specialist skills. These skills include predicting content of a text, scanning for specific information, skimming to understand the general idea, and deducing context from the literal meaning of the text. When teaching receptive skills teachers must be aware of three challenges. These include the language contained in the text, the topic of the text and the tasks students will be required to perform in relation to the text. To combat these challenges teachers must pre-teach challenging vocabulary, carefully select texts appropriate to studentsÂ’ level and interests and include comprehension tasks that promote understanding as opposed to just checking understanding. There are a few key points that teachers should keep in mind in order to have a successful receptive skills lesson. Firstly, choose material that motivates and interests the students. Build interest before reading or listening to the text. Pre-teach complex vocabulary or sentence structures, but do not overdue this stage. Incorporate a variety of material and use this material to practice different skills in the lesson. Use realistic
comprehension tasks that aid in studentsÂ’ understanding. Lastly, incorporate tasks in that Activate phase that naturally flow from the text. ", This unit briefly explains receptive stills which include reading and listening. From this unit I have understood the roles played by reading and listening in the acquisition of language. I have also understood that both reading and listening are equally important and as such one should not supersede the other., This unit explain the use of receptive skills which are reading and listening.
