This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This module examines the Productive Skills required by a student and class activities associated with it. Productive Skills are a studentÂ’s ability to speak and write in English. A studentÂ’s lack of ability to write and speak in English can affect the studentÂ’s understanding, interpretation and learning of English. A lack of Productive Skills can also be a reason for a student not doing homework or participating in a lesson. During the teaching of Productive Skills special attention must be paid to accuracy and fluency of the language. Accuracy will be more focussed upon in the study phase of a lesson whilst fluency will feature more in the activity stage of a lesson. The studentÂ’s ability to read and write are equally important as it could reflect how educated a student is or a lack thereof. There are three different class activities associated with speaking namely: Controlled Activities, Guided Activities and Creative Communication. A Controlled Activity focuses more on accuracy and the teacher generally controls the lesson. Guided Activities also focus on accuracy but the lesson is more flexible and creative. This type of lesson is controlled by the teacher but the exact language spoken isnÂ’t. Creative Communication focuses more on fluency than accuracy.
The teacher creates a scenario and the content of the language is created by the students. Students tend to be reluctant to speak in class for various reasons and teacher must be able to motivate and encourage participation by the student through the type of lessons planned. The topic must be interesting and engaging to the student. Feed back to the students after a lesson also helps with their motivation. When focussing on the writing aspect of a lesson, the student needs to be aware of the different forms of writing e.g. the writing of formal documents as opposed to informal documents. Students must be aware of different writing styles e.g. when emailing, writing poetry and postcards. In the writing of a document attention must be paid to the layout, spelling, style and punctuation. The formation of the English alphabet generally presents students of a native language with a degree of difficulty. The formation has to be taught to the students by the teacher. A teacher has to constantly encourage the students to better or improve their writing skills. Students must be aware of spelling errors as it could cause a misunderstanding with the reader. Students will experience difficulty with spelling, especially with words that sound the same but are spelt differently. Pronunciation
of words must be taught together with their meaning to limit errors. The most effective way to help students with spelling and writing is through continuous reading. A teacher must encourage the students to do a lot of creative writing. The students must then be allowed to check their spelling and any other errors they may have made. The more practice the student has in creative writing the better the result which in turn affords the student a sense of accomplishment. ", This unit covers the two productive skills: speaking and writing. Reading it I learned about the differences between the two skills; in speaking fluency is more important than accuracy
