This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
There are four basic skills in any language: Receptive skills – reading and listening Productive skills- speaking and writing All these skills are important and a teacher must try and include all these skills to have an integrated skills lesson. One does not just read or listen for the sake of it. There are certain motives and reasons behind it for example reading instructions or directions on a map. There is a purpose for reading and listening to those as opposed to those who read and listen for entertainment; for the pleasure of it. Understanding of any context depends on ones expertise some key areas example predictive skills where one has to predict the content of a certain headline or dialogue, reading information thoroughly in order to get detailed information etc. Problems may arise where students will find the topic of the lesson boring or uninteresting. This is where the teacher must create a general interest within the classroom to gauge the students attention; making the class more lively, having a good attitude when coming into class etc. Tasks should not be too easy or hard but be realistically achievable. ", Receptive skill and productive skills are equally important. Pre-teaching new vocabulary that will be presented in texts is very important to help students
get a full understanding of what they are reading. Adapting the texts is also very beneficial to lower level English language learners who are not able to understand the original text due to their level. Creating interest in students to engage them in the topic is also very important and good to keep in mind when creating a lesson., In this unit I learned that there are four basic skills in any language - receptive and productive. Receptive would be reading and listening. Productive would be talking and writing. All parts are very important in learning and comprehending a subject. There are different types of reading and listening. You can do so with a purpose or for pleasure. Instructions vs. entertainment. There are 5 ways we read and listen: predictive - headlines
