This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
I've learned speaking and writing are the productive skills of the integrated skills, and are as equally important as the receptive skills. Speaking and writing are used in communicating, and writing is considered the most neglected in a learning environment. Writing is a bit more complex than speaking, because it requires proper vocabulary, grammar and punctuation to be fully understood by the recipient. Speaking, on the other hand, is more forgiving and misinterpretations can usually be cleared up within or during the conversation. Communication occurs because people have some kind of communicative purpose. They have something to say, they want to listen, and or they are interested in what is being said. Therefore, when teaching the teacher needs to create “the need and desire” to motivate student’s participation. Accuracy and fluency are equally important. Accuracy is checked in a more controlled activity, the study phase. The teacher, typically, leads the sessions and provides feedback in such activities as: Drilling and Prompting, where the teacher controls the language. Also, there’s a difference when accuracy is checked in more creative and productive activities. The teacher controls the students’ output, but the exact language the student
use isn't controlled in such activities as: Model dialogues and Guided role-play. Fluency is checked in creative activities (activate phase), typically the studentsÂ’ control their own output without interference from the teacher, and such activities include: Free role-play, Discussions, Information gap, and etc. Students will shy away from speaking if they lack confidence in their ability, fear embarrassment by making mistakes, are intimidated by their peers, are generally not interested in the topic, plus the student might have had a previous bad learning experience, and there might be cultural reasons that hinder the studentÂ’s participation. Therefore, teachers need to create a comfortable atmosphere that allows students not to be afraid to speak and make mistakes, and hopefully they will enjoy communicating with their peers and the teacher. There are different methods to encourage participation and interaction, such as: Pair-work, Group work, providing plenty of Controlled and Guided Practice before fluency activities, otherwise build up their confidence. Possibly change the Classroom Dynamics and allow the studentsÂ’ time to think about what theyÂ’re going to say. All which can be easily incorporated into an ESA method. A well-defined lesson plan that
includes feedback strategies is a good idea. ", This unit discussed the importance of the two productive skills: speaking and writing. I learned quite a bit from this unit. I learned that games are a good idea to get students to communicate with each other as well as the teacher. I don't usually like to play games because I feel it takes away from learning time
