Some theorists suggest that lesson planning is not a good idea because it creates a more fixed and teacher centred lesson, however it is very difficult for new teachers to be so flexible and still feel comfortable because when you let the students decide what to do in a class you must still be prepared to deal with the language problems that may arise and not lose direction. Therefore most teachers will make notes or complete lesson forms to simply act as templates with plenty room for flexibility. Lesson plans act as aids, a strategy for how you will achieve your desired end results. Lesson plans act as working documents that keep you focused while acting as support, something you can lean on during a lesson. A lesson plan also acts as a record of what the class has done and the materials used, to be looked over and modified for future lessons as well as a guide for substitute teachers in case you get sick. Keep your lesson plans simple, you might need to consult it during a class. Do not try to plan out the lesson down to each little detail. Structure it, and keep the same structure. Write down how long you think an activity might take in the margin. Try to make sure activities go together as to not interrupt the flow. Keep it flexible and donÂ’t be afraid to change something
that isnÂ’t working. Be organized. Make sure you actually brought your lesson plan. Make sure you have all the necessary aids and materials. Check that the equipment works. Arrange your materials so that they are always handy and easy to find. Make sure the board is clean. Chat with students as they come into class to break the ice and establish rapport. In your lesson plan include your goals for the students by the end of the lesson. Include your personal goals and how you can better yourself or your lesson. Try and anticipate the problems you may encounter. Put down themes for context, how a current lesson fits in with the previous and future lessons. Put down the teaching aids you will require. Put down what activities youÂ’re going to have and how they will help the students achieve the lesson objectives. Put down your ESA phases. Plan out how long you think an activity will take and then adjust your lesson accordingly. Figure out who will be interacting and when. Take not of the level of ability your class has with the language. Plan your activities around how many students will be in your class. Keep a historical record of what you have done. Monitor the quality of your lessons and never stop trying to improve them. When planning a sequence of lessons you must be flexible,
you will often have to make changes to your lessons to improve their quality. Set goals for your students and yourself. Review your lessons to ensure that everyone in the class, including yourself, retains the information. Make sure include a wide variety of activities and that all skills are included and given equal treatment.
