The unit focuses on the reading and listening receptive skills. People generally read and listen for two main reasons: entertainment or specific purposes (that will help achieve a particular goal). After having explained the motives for reading and listening the unit deals with a number of specialist sub-skills that teachers should teach students in order to help them read/listen successfully. Amongst these there are the predictive skills, scanning for specific information, skimming for the gist of a text/dialogue, looking for detailed information, deducting meaning from context. Major listening/reading problems connected with language, choosing a topic, and generating interest in students are then analyzed and possible solutions are offered. Lastly, an example of a patchwork ESA lesson on Elvis Presley is demonstrated. What I found useful about this lesson is the paragraph suggesting solutions to common problems that students have with listening/reading. In particular, I think that pre-teaching vocabulary or grammar is a good way to encourage students and help increase their confidence in the two skills. Also, another point within the unit that I found very interesting is the importance given to the selection of texts for the lessons on the basis of students' interest
in the topic. A good selection of texts will help get students engaged in the lesson, generating their enthusiasm and active participation in the classroom activities.
