Speaking and writing are considered to be productive skills of a language. They might seem different from each other but both of them are used for the same purpose such as generally communicative purposes, saying something, listening to the other people and, for sure, being interested in what is being said when people communicate with each other. As I mentioned in the previous unit reflexion, the school where I work here in Russia has skill-based classes such as writing, reading, listening, pronunciation, discussion, and so forth, and I have noticed that in each class, although they are skill-based, it is impossible to focus on only one skill ignoring the others. But I can say that all students in general have more problems, especially in speaking than writing. Though speaking naturally improves in one's mother tongue, in one's second language it turns into a nightmare as the learners have lack of confidence because of the fear of making mistakes or previous learning experiences such as being exposed to the teacher-centered grammar-translation technique which was the mainstay of language teaching and learning for a very long period and unfortunately it can be hard to overcome this habit. Thus, this unit gave me new ideas for encouraging my students to speak more confidently following
the ESA method, especially with the help of keeping the activate phase longer and diversification of accuracy and fluency activities. As to writing skill, I have once again understood the importance of punctuation because Russian punctuation rules work differently from the English ones. After all, all the skills in a language: receptive – reading and listening, productive – speaking and writing should be effectively used to avoid misunderstandings and the teacher must be very attentive and follow an integrated way while teaching to achieve a proper balance similar to that one in real speech.
