This is Chantelle’s video diary entry after completing unit 16 of her online TEFL course. Unit 16 covers conditionals and reported speech. Both language points can cause difficulty for English language learners and teachers alike. The unit outlines the structure and use of the conditionals and also provides some useful teaching ideas that can be used in your own classes. It also goes into detail about when we use reported speech and the changes that occur when changing direct speech into reported speech. You will also find teaching ideas to help you understand how this language point can be taught in the classroom.
Below you can read feedback from an ITTT graduate regarding one section of their online TEFL certification course. Each of our online courses is broken down into concise units that focus on specific areas of English language teaching. This convenient, highly structured design means that you can quickly get to grips with each section before moving onto the next.
Unit eleven covers receptive skills and how to teach them. It starts by talking about how we read and listen and it's not just about using your eyes and ears. Gives details about what areas the students should be comfortable with so they can gain more understanding when the read and listen to English. I find it helpful when there is an example lesson plan to read and study from because it gives me a better idea of what a specific lesson plan should look like. This unit introduces the basic grammar elements to form a simple sentence and the topic is parts of speech. The unit classifies and defines these grammar elements according to to their use and meaning. In the majority of the cases (Nouns, articles, adjectives, adverbs ext) people are introduced to this topic in a natural way in their culture and later taught at elementary school. In conclusion this unit deals with the first steps in getting to learn a language.
