This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Teaching productive skills The unit goes through productive skills which followed the previous unit of receptive skills. Basically productive skills are producing output, and that happens by speaking or writing. The two of them being different, speaking often focuses more on fluency because it can be corrected on the spot while writing must be more accurate, due to being produced once and kind of 'sent out once' so corrections are in a way not possible later on. Both of these are important and neither of them can be relegated. Speaking Skills Speaking activities in the class room can be controlled for example when practicing word pronunciation (drill practice) or guided for example in the case of modeled dialogues or creative in the case of free role play. The unit has a list of typical problems that students might face while speaking in the class, for example lack of confidence, which can be rid off by having pair working or a good way would be guided activities. Then there is a typical ESA lesson plan. Engage: Engaging the students by getting them into a conversation about weather conditions in their home city. Study: Teaching the students weather related vocabulary for example with gap-fill exercises. Activate: Students pick a country and write a weather forecast typical to the
country in question. There are good guide lines of what to do before, during and after the activity. For example before the activity it is good to make sure that the level of the task is good for the students is appropriate to the students' level and any difficulties to come with vocabulary should be predetermined so they can be effectively taught at the lesson. After the activity it is good to give feedback and the time for this should not be hasty because the students need to know what problems should be addressed in the future. During the activity it is good that the students are being monitored but not interrupted, because it might discourage them or intimidate them to be productive when it's time for activate stage. Writing Skills Writing skills include knowing how to write different styles of texts for example business letters, normal letters or simple chat talks which is not that formal. Handwriting which is basically in my opinion not a part of the language learning since english learners in todays world all now how to write some writing system, but it is good to pay attention to it because no matter how good a text is, the appearance can give it a negative touch and a feeling that the writer maybe doesn't know english that well. Spelling is important because english
is not a phonetic language and a lot of words can be pronounced exactly the same but written differently. Layout and punctuation is also important because a single comma can alter the meaning of a sentence. Creative writing should be encouraged more because it is often given for homework and thus many times being neglected as a boring homework. A typical ESA lesson plan for writing skills: Engage: Students receive an extract from a weather forecast and then go through the it and discuss what happens in it. Study: Students are taught weather forecast vocabulary. Activate: Students have to create their own weather forecast of their own home country for example. At the end of the unit there are a lot different game activities listed that can be really helpful when teaching, and they shouldn't not be belittled in the learning process even when teaching adults. I found this unit really nice and I had a lot to write about it!
