This unit covered the other two modes of communication being the productive skills of writing and speaking and how to effectively teach these skills. It was interesting to see that writing is often the most neglected skills in classroom teaching and often relegated to homework. Giving time and value to the teaching of writing is something that was reinforced in this unit. The components of writing was something that was also good to understand better including handwriting, spelling, punctuation and layout and creative writing. Understanding what motivates and engages students and how the teacher can encourage student interaction was useful. Application of group work, pair work, balance of controlled and guided practice, careful planning, classroom dynamics and ensuring sufficient time was something for the teacher to consider. I learnt about how to encourage students and the reasons for this which may include lack of confidence, fear of making mistakes, peer intimidation, lack of interest previous learning experience and cultural background. When teaching I must be mindful of these factors and plan this into the lesson. It is most important to create a comfortable atmosphere where it is okay to make mistakes and there is enjoyment and fun in communication. Communication games
- where competitive or cooperative are really useful tools in this respect and allow learning to also be fun. The unit explained the differences around when and how to apply accuracy and fluency activities with examples of ESA lessons provided. Guidelines for how to run a free/creative speaking activity were detailed for before, during and after the lesson. An example of a typical creative writing activity lesson was also provided. Keeping students engaged and interested by making the topic relevant, fun and useful was something to keep in mind when planning my own lessons. It will be interesting in applying learnings from this unit to more set curriculum that I may encounter once I start my formal teaching. How to successfully build into existing curriculum and adapt and remain flexible in approaches according to the needs of the students and the expectations of the skill. Having clear objectives and lesson plans is critical.
