Every ESL student needs to be exposed to the new language, understand the meaning, understand the construction, and must be able to practice and produce it. There must be a balance to the way students are introduced to the new language. This balance can be achieved through varied ESA methodologies. Usually, lessons are specifically focused on one area of the new language. Incorporating the various types of ESA methodologies(Straight Arrow, Boomerang, and Patchwork)can provide effective strategies in the lessons.Grammar lessons are usually taught by the Straight Arrow Method, while functions lessons are taught by the Boomerang and/or Patchwork Methods. Teaching vocabulary involves four factors: 1) the similarity to L1 2)the similarity to acquired English vocabulary 3) Spelling and pronunciation , and 4)appropriacy. When selecting what vocabulary to teach, the teacher must consider the appropriacy to the students and task at hand, frequency and coverage(how and when to use it), and the teachability( levels will require more or less visual language. Students need to know the meaning, the use, the structure, how it affects other words, spelling, and pronunciation. In teaching language grammatical structures, the students need to know the meaning, how and when it is
used, what the form is, and how it will be said and written. Presenting the new grammatical structure can involve discussions, question and answer,using pictures, drawings, realia, and scenario building. For the Study Phase, pronunciation and intonation, as well as drilling, unscrambling sentences, and sentence building, are examples of exercises to be used. To activate the task, role-play, discussions or debates, communication games, and storybuilding can be used. Teaching language functions, such as inviting, refusing, agreeing, disagreeing, and suggesting, involves the appropriacy of the new language, whether it be formal, informal,technical, or other language environments. These language skills can be learned through role-plays, discussions, listening to recorded dialogues, and student interaction activities, plus many creative activities.Drama can also play an important role in the teaching of functions.
