Unit 11 introduced us to the receptive skills of listening and reading. Unit 12 teaches us the other skills of speaking and writing, the productive skills. Unit 12 nicely breaks down the difference between accuracy and fluency. Accuracy is about producing correct language through grammar, vocabulary, punctuation, and pronunciation. Accuracy skills are often produced through drilling (i.e. repetitiveness). Fluency, on the other hand, is about creating a comfort with the language without worrying too much about mistakes. In other words, fluency is about creating a flow of communication rather than pinpoint accuracy. Fluency is often promoted through role-play, discussions, debates, simulations, and communication games. Unit 12 lists many reasons why students may be uncomfortable speaking. Some of these factors include lack of confidence, peer intimation, fear of making mistakes, and cultural norms associated with the student. Some ways to encourage student interaction is to do pair/group work, make speaking activities useful, have plenty of guided practice before speaking (or writing) activities, and in many cases the teacher will need to set aside enough time for students to think and plan what they are going to say. Careful planning of the course lessons and activities can be beneficial
in creating a successful learning environment. For example, decide what the goal(s) of the lesson plan will be, create activities beforehand including simple to follow directions and time length, bring/prepare all necessary materials, and encourage students to participate during class.
