An aid to planning – Writing down what you expect your students to achieve by the end of the lesson, and how you intend to do it. It also helps you think logically through the stages in relation to available time. 2. A working document – It helps you to keep on topic and gives you something to refer to during the lesson. 3. A record – It acts as a record of what the class has done and which materials have been used. How to write a lesson plan? Basic Principles of lesson planning: a. Keep it simple. b. Do not try to script the lesson. c. Structure it and maintain the same structure. d. Write the anticipated time for each activity in the margin. e. Check for balance of skills. Make sure the activities fit together to give the lesson a smooth flow. f. Keep it flexible and open to adaptation. How to organize the lesson planning? Practical things you can do to make sure your lesson goes smoothly: a. Check that you have your lesson plan. b. Run through your lesson plan and make sure you have all the necessary aids and materials needed. c. Check that the equipment works. d. Lay out the materials and aids so that you can easily find them. e. Arrange the seating as desired. f. Make
sure that the board is clean. g. Be ready to chat to the students as they come into class. What to include in a lesson plan? Include these in your lesson plans: a. Learner objectives – what you want your student to achieve b. Personal aims – what you want to achieve, area of improvements c. Context – shows the theme your lesson based d. Teaching aids – materials and other aids needed for the lesson e. Anticipated problems – important to try and anticipate possible problems that may arise f. Procedure – the activities used to achieve the learner objectives g. Phase – Engage, Study or Activate h. Timing – It is vital to plan how long each activity is expected to take. Must be realistic and flexible. i. Interaction – Include who will be interacting at each stage of lesson, Teacher-student, Student-Student or Student alone. j. Class level – level of ability that the class has with the English language. k. Number of students – anticipate how many students will attend to make sure the activities are suitable for the class size. l. Date/Time – to keep historical record of what you have done in the class and when. m. Teacher and Observer’s name – useful of the class is being monitored. Monitoring your lessons A good teacher will
want to reflect and monitor the quality of his own lessons. This will continually strive in improving our skills and make our work enjoyable. Do self-evaluation form. Planning a sequence of lessons Issues to consider in planning the sequence of lessons: a. Flexibility – we will often need to update or make changes to plans during lessons. b. Goals – experienced teachers build goals for the students. This will give the teacher and the student something to aim at. c. Revision – lesson contents needs to be continually reviewed over a sequence of lessons to ensure students retain this information. d. Variety and balance – when planning a sequence of lessons we want to make sure all skills are included and given equal treatment.
