Below you can read feedback from an ITTT graduate regarding one section of their online TEFL certification course. Each of our online courses is broken down into concise units that focus on specific areas of English language teaching. This convenient, highly structured design means that you can quickly get to grips with each section before moving onto the next.
This unit covered receptive skills, reading and listening. These skills are equally as valuable as productive skills, but require a different teaching approach. With reading, the students can refer back to texts, but with listening, they need to be able to comprehend the first time around in most cases. As new teachers, we'll need to be sure that we're cognizant of which type of skill we're exercising, so that we give equal focus to development in different areas. This module covers the two types of receptive skills (reading and listening) in addition to productive skills which are speaking and writing. The various reasons for the existence of receptive skills are covered. Following that an example of a lesson plan focused on receptive skill building is given. To be frank this module was on the drier side; although I recon that it has more to do with the material itself and less with the delivery/organization of the module.
