We've seen the present tenses in isolation. Now, let's look at them together. Our first example is 'I play football every week.' This is the present simple tense and it has the structure 'subject I' + verb 'play'. This is quite a simple tense for students to form. However, they have to be aware of the third person singular form 'he', 'she' or 'it', which usually adds an '-s' or an '-es' to the end of the base form of the verb. 'I play football,' but 'He plays football.' Also, the question of negative forms using the auxiliary verb 'do' or 'does' 'Do you play football?' 'I don't play football.' 'Does she play football?' 'She doesn't play football.' The present simple tense is used to talk about habits, routines, facts and general truths and as such it's probably the most commonly used tense within the English language.
Below you can read feedback from an ITTT graduate regarding one section of their online TEFL certification course. Each of our online courses is broken down into concise units that focus on specific areas of English language teaching. This convenient, highly structured design means that you can quickly get to grips with each section before moving onto the next.
This unit delved into the constructs of the english language and first introduced different tenses. We started by looking at present tenses and the four components - present simple, present continuous, present perfect and present perfect continuous. This was a lesson I struggled with as, although I am fluent in English and it is my native language, the specific constructs behind the grammar and the 'why' we use specific tenses is something foreign to me.The productive skills are in the students the harder skills to improve because they require an effort from the students that sometimes is missing. In order to activate and improving those skills the teacher must has to organize a series of activities and games which get students involved. in particular the speaking skills will be the hardest to activated because many students are not comfortable to speak in front of other people in a different language.
