This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
In this unit we studied the receptive skills that are reading and listening. Reading and listening are skills that not only involve the use of our eyes and ears but the use of our mind to understand words and process them in our pre-existing knowledge to gain true understanding. There are two main reasons or motives for reading and listening. When we read or listen for a purpose, we want to achieve a particular aim or goal. On the other hand when we read or listen for entertainment it is because we find it pleasurable or enjoyable. There are several skills students need to employ when reading and listening and their understanding will depend on their expertise in the following areas: • Predictive skills • Specific information – scanning • General idea – skimming • Detailed information • Deduction from content There are some problems and difficulties that students may present when reading and listening like sentence length, words length and unfamiliar words. As more we expose our students to the language the more they will learn. As teachers it is very important to consider the ways of approaching language difficulties. Pre- teaching vocabulary will help students as we teach them difficult or unknown vocabulary prior to commencing a reading or listening
activity. Teachers need to remember that learning to understand texts without knowing every word is a skill that we need to encourage. The topic of the text or a dialogue will help to motivate students. If the topic itÂ’s not interesting it is less likely that the students will engage in the activity. That is why the teacher needs to create interest too in the task so students will read and listen with real enthusiasm. The comprehension tasks after a reading or listening activity are very important, tasks need to promote understanding as opposed to just check understanding. In this unit we learned that receptive skills are not just reading and listening with our eyes and ears but making connections with our mind to really understand and as teachers we need to motivate and encourage students to practice the understanding areas and to create interest when having a reading or listening activity. ", I think that my natural tendency is to teach more writing and speaking than reading and listening
