In this unit we discussed teaching methods related to the acquisition of new language. There are four basic things that students must do with new language in order to successfully it master. Students must be exposed to new language, understand its meaning, understand how it is constructed and be able to practice and produce it. Specifically, a teacher must keep in mind that a student's receptive vocabulary is much greater than their productive vocabulary. Thus, a teacher must strive to expand students' productive vocabulary through their lessons. The level of difficulty will depend upon its similarity to students' native language, its similarity to English words already known to the student, the spelling and pronunciation as well as the vocabulary's appropriacy. Therefore a teacher must consider carefully when selecting vocabulary to teach. The teacher must think about the vocabulary's appropriacy to the student and task, the frequency and coverage, and the word's teachability, especially with beginning students. It is important for the teacher to clearly cover the meaning, usage, grammar, interaction, spelling and pronunciation of the vocabulary being studied in each lesson. When focusing on teaching grammar structures it is important to note that the teaching strategy
will be different from teaching vocabulary. Students must know the meaning, usage, forms and patterns as well as any differences between the spoken and written forms.", During this unit
