There were many differences in the teaching, and consequently, the involvement and comprehension of the students between the first and second videos. The lesson in the first video was so bad it was painful to watch. He didnÂ’t smile and had a mean tone of voice He didnÂ’t call students by their names, and never even bothered to introduce himself or find out what their names were. He dove right in with out any rapport. Other things he did wrong: -He had his back to them for a long time when he wrote the grammar structure on the board. -He didnÂ’t explain the grammar structure he just wrote it on the board and didnÂ’t even read it out loud. -In the engage part of the lesson he didnÂ’t do anything to get the students to engage. He just kept asking them to give examples of auxillary verbs without explaining what they were. He was intimidating so of course none of the students wanted to answer him. They didnÂ’t know what he was talking about and he made it scary to ask questions. -He should have prompted them to get them to engage more. For example. Does anyone here have a pet? What can your pet do? Can your dog run? Can your dog lick? In the second video he corrected all of these mistakes and had the students participate in creating a list of animals which was
fun for them because he set it up like a little competition and used humor to lighten the mood. In the engage phase he used miming and pictures to enhance understanding. He also explained the structure better. In the first lesson there was also no drilling or repetition—the students didn’t get to practice actually speaking at all. In the second lesson the teacher included repetition and got the students to speak sentences. In the activate phase of the first lesson, he didn’t leave enough time and he didn’t get them to activate. He basically did the same thing he did in the study phase but was even worse at instructions. He should have split them into groups to get them to talk to each other. Then they might be comfortable or warm up a little. This was corrected in the second lesson. ", Watching the two videos was very enlightening. The first video puzzled me
