Unit 4, Teaching a new language, focuses on the vocabulary, grammar, and functions of a language and uses the analogy of a tree to impress how important all of the parts are to the structure as a whole. The lesson starts of with the teaching of vocabulary. The first thing to consider when teaching vocabulary is what to introduce and when to introduce it. It is important to introduce vocal when its is relevant contextually or important to a task. The knowledge students need to gain from vocabulary is meaning, use, word grammar, interaction, spelling, and pronunciation. To teach vocabulary you must engage the student you can effectively do this through the use of pictures and mime and action. Some study ideas are crosswords, matching exercises, and example sentences. For the activate stage you can use role playing or other simulations. The second component to teaching according to the lesson is to introduce grammar and structure. A few key things that all students will need to know when learning a language are what the language means, how it is used, how the grammatical form is, and how it is said/written. To engage the class the teach can begin with a discussion or build a scenario. In either case the instructor is finding a prompt to build off of. During the study portion look at
the language in context through text and activate with further discussion or roleplaying. When teaching language function a boomerang approach to the ESA method can be highly effective. I found this lesson really informative as it gives great examples along with a structured method in creating lesson plans. I also helps to inform a teacher on how to control the dynamic of a classroom through seating arrangements and how to successfully implement group work and activities while following the ESA method.
