This unit concerns teaching new language in terms of vocabulary, grammar, and language functions. For vocabulary, it covers the factors which determine whether the selected vocabulary is easy or diffcult for the students, shows the factors involved in selecting vocabulary items and also exactly what students need to get about a vocabulary item. It then goes on to give a typical straight arrow ESA lesson plan. For grammar it deals with what students need to know, for example meaning, use patterns and forms etc., as well as giving a typical patchwork ESA lesson plan. For language functions, it discusses how appropriacy is important asw ell as the activation stage. It then suggests either na boomerang or patchwork ESA lesson plan. For all of these areas of new language learning it is clear that the level of the students and the objectives of the lesson both need to be taken into account. It is useful to see how various lesson plans are developed based on the ESA model.
