Unit 11 introduced the concept of the productive and receptive skills of language. The focus of the lesson was on the receptive skills. Where productive skills are expressions such as writing and speaking, receptive skills are impression based, i.e. reading and listening. Our motives for using receptive skills can be broken down into either motives that are purpose driven or for reasons of entertainment. It was explained that the things we read and listen to are not only perceived by hearing and seeing, but are analyzed through the lens of our pre-existing knowledge. The lesson also covered the ways in which we read and listen and the specialist skills we use to do so. Predictive skills are those we use to form a general assumption of what we are going to read or listen to based on little prior knowledge. Such predictions prepare us to pick up on cues from what we will later be hearing or reading. When we are scanning we are looking to glean specific information. When we are skimming we are looking for the overall general idea. Sometimes though a more thorough understanding is intended and this is called detailed listening or reading. Finally the skill to deduce the meaning of words or language from the context is important. It allows us the ability to understand unknown
vocabulary based on the context or known language with situation specific or implied meaning. The lesson integrated receptive skills with teaching techniques and explained various problems we may have and the ways which we can approach them.
