Unit 11 is focused on two basic skills in any language – receptive skills such as reading and listening. There are two main reasons for reading and listening and we can divide them in two categories: for a purpose and for entertainment. Understanding of a context depends on our expertise in a few areas such as predictive skills, specific information – scanning, general idea – skimming, detailed information and deduction from context. There are many issues which can present problems to learners of English, for example: sentence length, word length, or a number of unfamiliar words. There are also many ways of helping students to approach language difficulty as pre – teaching vocabulary and careful selection of texts. The unit shows an example of a typical receptive skills lesson (patchwork). I have learnt the basic keys to successful receptive skills lesson and how to use them in the classroom.", Unit 11 focused on receptive skills: reading and listening. Thus far I feel that I have learned about the different specialist skills applied to reading and listening is based on whether or not the person is reading/listening for a purpose or entertainment. An individual reading/listening for a purpose will more likely be applying receptive skills for getting detailed information
and to deduce the actual meaning from the context of the material. Whereas individuals reading for entertainment are more likely to scan or skim for information., The teaching receptive skills unit was a thought provoking unit. I liked learning and thinking about the different reasons and motives we have for reading and listening. I also thought it was helpful to learn about the different skills; and though the skills are not new to me
