This unit explains the importance of a lesson plan and offers various tips to create a lesson plan. While some teachers argue that lesson planning may cause a more fixed and teacher-centered lesson, it helps teachers, particularly inexperienced teachers, to prepare as well as to be flexible. The three major functions of lesson planning are 1) an aid to planning, 2) a working document, and 3) a record. Among these, I think the most basic principle of lesson planning is to keep it simple, rather than writing a perfect script for the lesson. Also, teachers need to be flexible, rather than always sticking with the plan. When teachers start their lessons, they need to make sure that they have their lesson plans, all the equipment works, and that the seating is arranged properly. To facilitate good rapport between teacher and students, it is a good idea to chat with the students as they come in. In the lesson plan, the following items should be included: learner objectives, personal aims, context, teaching aids, anticipated problems, procedure, lesson phases, timing, interaction, class level, number of students, date/time, and teacherÂ’s and observerÂ’s names (if there is an observer). In this unit, a straight arrow ESA lesson was introduced. It usually starts with a broad
conversation on the topic (engage), continues with learning vocabulary or grammar through some drills or worksheets (study), and ends with studentsÂ’ actual practice of the vocabulary or grammar in survey or roll-play games, for example (activate).
