This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Units 11 and 12 cover the four basic language skills; the first is focused on receptive skills, (listening and reading) and the second on productive skills, (speaking and writing). Once again, they're equally important and we must include them all in our courses. If we want students to participate and learn as much as possible from our lessons we need to motivate them so, as the purpose of both speaking and writing is communication, our first goal should be to arouse our students' interest and create the desire to communicate during the Engage stage. We also want students to achieve both accuracy and fluency in speech, so we'll organize accuracy-base controlled or guided activities for the Study stage and fluency-based guided or creative activities for the Activate stage. Some students may find speaking activities quite intimidating for a series of reasons. It is the role of the teacher to identify the cause of such reluctance and come up with appropriate solutions such as grouping strategies and pre-teaching, always making sure the atmosphere in the classroom is positive and relaxed. The guidelines for creative speaking activities also help as they tell us how to: - Prepare the activity in order to avoid any bad surprises, such as lack of material or of necessary pre-teaching,
unexpected problems we don't know how to deal with. - Carry out the activity involving everyone, being clear, making sure all students understand and monitoring. - End the activity with a good feedback focused on positive and improvable points. Although speaking and writing skills have a lot in common there are certain differences to be taken into account, for example written form is usually more formal than spoken form and there are also a series of writing sub-skills to be taught such us spelling, punctuation, handwriting, layout and pronunciation. The unit also provides us with examples of straight-arrow ESA lessons for both skills and explains the importance of using games as teaching tools, be they competitive, co-operative, communicative or linguistic.
