Now it is time to talk about lesson planning. It entails arranging and organizing what is done in class and how it is done. Although some people may be against it, it is convenient in order to prepare and keep an aid to planning, a working document and a record. Some principles to draw up a proper lesson planning are: simplicity, no script of the lesson is required, structuring, time estimation, balance of skills, flexibility and adaptation. From a practical point of view, it is prudent to do some checking to make sure everything is in its place. For example, we can check we have our lesson plan with us, as well as materials and equipment. We can also lay out and organize things on our desk, arrange seating and clean the board to save time. It is helpful to be ready to welcome students and chat with them in order to break the ice. A typical lesson plan would include the following sections: learning objectives, personal aims, context, teaching aids, anticipated problems, procedure, phase, timing, interaction, class level, number of students, date/time and teacherÂ’s and observerÂ’s names. Likewise, it would be very interesting to accompany the lesson plan with a self-evaluation form. In this form we can evaluate our lessons and what went well or wrong. This is a way of helping
ourselves to develop. Finally, we are going to comment on planning a sequence of lessons. In a way it is similar to planning a single lesson, but some issues are to be considered: - Flexibility: changes should be expected so that modifications and updates can be made. - Goals: medium and long term objectives help keep students focused. - Revision: going over contents is essential so that students retain information. - Variety and balance: including the four skills in our planning as well as a good mix of activities is essential to achieve a thorough and comprehensive teaching methodology.", Lesson plan helps the lesson run smoothly
