We read or listen for a purpose, to achieve a specific goal, like finding directions to a place or event, or for information on how something works and how to fix it. We also read or listen for entertainment through books or listening when a friend tells us jokes or a story. Often it is a mixture of both. There is more to reading and listening than just using our eyes and ears. Our minds must be able to recognize and understand the words and also grasp their overall meaning from pre-existing knowledge. We employ a number of specialist skills when reading or listening. Predictive skills: to be able to predict content based on an article or dialogue from a headline or introduction. Specific information – scanning: We listen or read for specific information. General idea – skimming: We do not focus on every word but instead try to get a general understanding of the content. Detailed information: To understand everything in detail. Deduction from context: To be able to deduce or understand the meaning or individual words and phrases from the context in which they are presented to us. Reading presents fewer problems as text is captured on screen or paper and may be read countless times, but sentence length, word length, and a number of unfamiliar words can present problems to
students when listening to something is concerned. One way of helping students through this is to pre-teach words that are essential to understanding and leaving other vocabulary words until later. Also, if a teacher is careful when selecting the listening and reading materials presented to the student they can be exposed to a variety of authentic and non-authentic texts. The topics of the text or dialogue chosen can also help motivate students. Knowing your students and what interests them is vital. When you create interest in the in the tasks there is a greater possibility that they will listen and read with real enthusiasm. We also need to provide comprehension tasks that promote understanding as opposed to just checking understanding.
