This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
The productive skills pose a number of challenges that are unique and create their own challenges for students. Both skills have a common goal, the need to communicate. They need to communicate because they have a communicative purpose, they want to say something, they want to listen to something, they are interested in what's being said, or a mix of these things together. When a teacher is planning an activity for the class, all of these factors should be kept in mind. We want to encourage the students to participate. The student, however, can feel a special vulnerability with productive skills as opposed to receptive skills. If we want students to be confident in the language, we must include both accuracy and fluency activities. Both are equally important in language learning. While writing, students have time to look at and/or edit what they are writing but cannot always readily do so in speaking. We need, however to address both in the EFL classroom. To get students to verbally produce the language, we can use controlled (accuracy based activities where the teacher controls the language), guided activities (accuracy based activities that allow for some creativity), and creative communication (which are fluency based, where the students control the language). In order to get
the students to speak, we must make sure that we overcome: lack of confidence, fear of making mistakes, peer intimidation, lack of interest in subject, previous, sometimes negative, learning experience, and cultural reasons. How can we achieve this end? We can encourage students to speak by using pair work, group work, guided practice before speaking, create a desire and need to communicate, look at the classroom dynamics, carefully plan the activity, and let the students plan what they are going to say. We must plan, carry out, and provide effective feedback to the students to ensure success. In practicing writing skills, we must pay attention to handwriting, spelling, layout and punctuation. A lack in any of these skills may make the writer seem uneducated and must be addressed so that meaning is not interrupted. Creative writing is where students shine and are encouraged to produce their own "masterpieces"". This can lead to confidence in the student. Writing can be taught through a number of games and prompts that are interesting to the students."
