This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Unit 11 Focuses on the Receptive Skills of Reading and Listening. This is broken down into sub-sections of the numerous types of reading and listening skills that are important to be aware of. Emphasis is placed on the importance of selecting the correct type of text for students so that it is both accessible for them and engaging. Therefore there is more chance they will be motivated by the material offered. This information is given in the form of an ESA lesson detailing each stage. The video also offers further insight and support into the practical teaching of Receptive Skills and again placing the skills into an ESA lesson plan situation. The Task Sheet at the end of the Unit offers the opportunity to put into practice what had been taught in the Unit. This allows the creation of two ESA lessons to be created utilising Task Materials of Comprehension, Gap filling exercises and grammar work. This unit has taught me the different types receptive skills in reference to listening and reading. I feel I have learnt to distinguish the specific difference between them and will now be able to utilise these skills when planning my lessons. Also the importance of selecting the appropriate texts for the students I am teaching to ensure they are of interest and also at the appropriate
level. Pre-teaching potential problems was emphasised on numerous occasions as was providing demonstration, monitoring, feedback and error correction phases within the ESA lesson. This Unit has helped to raise my awareness of the diversity of receptive skills and their importance in the teaching of TEFL.", Listening skills are more challenging than reading skills. Realizing that pre-knowledge is the difference between ""animal cruelty"" and a sports reference was very humorous to me. I have experienced the challenge of explaining context to an ELL and this lesson actually helped me to understand ESL students a little better. Pre-teaching new or difficult vocabulary words is a must and I will utilize this in the future."
