This unit enlightens us about the Productive skills required for communication, which are Writing and Speaking. People generally communicate to ask or know something, to listen or to say something. In the classroom, while teaching speaking skills we come across two types of activities, the accuracy and fluency based activities. The accuracy based activities are created by the teacher and and the language used is controlled. The teacher guides the use of vocabulary and language. This type of activities focus more on learning of new concepts and language. The fluency activities focus on the use of the newly learnt language and vocabulary. these allow for free usage of new vocabulary and concepts with creativity. Accuracy activities are usually employed in the study phase and fluency activities in the activate phase of the lesson. At times students tend to shy away or avoid speaking too much in the class. this can be because of peer intimidation, fear of making mistakes and /or lack of confidence. The teacher has to make amends to the classroom set up and environment to make sure all students are participating equally. Pair/group work should be encouraged more, proper lesson planning and more purposeful topics of discussion help eradicate such issues in the class. Writing skills require
more precision and knowledge in the terms of spelling and letter formation. In writing, if the viewpoint is not set out clearly, there are many chances of confusion among the readers. In case of speaking one can correct any confusion, but writing needs more understanding of the language. Writing poses difficulties because of differences in written and spoken forms of some words, spellings and grammatical use. If punctuation is not done correctly, it can lead to the production of hard to understand text, which can annoy the reader.
