This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
To me, the class in lesson one seemed very dull, unexciting and monotonous. The teacher had a very imposing and unfriendly attitude towards the students and their comprehension skills. He started with an imposing attitude regarding modal auxiliary verbs as if the students were supposed to know about it. He should have explained the usage and whole concept of modals to them first and then put up questions regarding them. He constantly gave them the feeling as if they did not know anything about the lesson being taught. While they were doing their assignment he was busy reading a book, instead of taking interest in their work and efforts. He left the class without finishing his lesson and taking feedback from them. On the other hand, the class in lesson two was very interesting as the teacher was very friendly, and made the students comfortable by introducing himself to them and taking their introductions in turn. He made learning English fun, interesting and a very easy task. The students felt very involved as he made them participate in the lesson . He made them practice proper pronunciation of the words through drills. He helped them complete the task and was very helpful and encouraging. Therefore, I can say that lesson two was more effective for the very reason, that the
students were very interested in the lesson and the atmosphere seemed live and vibrant. The teacher took special care that the students in no way feel dwarfed by his knowledge. He very gently coaxed the responses from his students without them being aware of it. He encouraged them during the different phases of engage, study and activate through simple exercises like gap fills and matching the animals with their verbs (action words). The students were in a participating spirit throughout the entire lesson. The teacher was very particular in taking positive feedback from his students and also ensured that they work in pairs to keep the interest alive. Main differences which I noticed between lesson one and lesson two were in the following areas : The teacher’s attitude to the students: • Teacher’s attitude in lesson one – seemed very offensive and uninspiring all along and made the students feel as if they are dull and do not know anything. He seemed very careless in his supervision of the class as he either sat aimlessly or read a book while the students were busy doing the assignment. He was unsuccessful in making the students participate in the lesson. • Teacher’s attitude in lesson two – seemed very friendly and he was successful in creating
a vibrant mood among the students. He at no point made the students feel that their knowledge of English is very little. He all along encouraged them and assisted them in solving their assignments. He was also very particular about feedback from the students. The students’ attitude towards the teacher: • Student’s attitude in lesson one – seemed very dull and uninterested in the lesson as they did not respond to the teacher’s lesson. They were not able to participate due to the unfriendly attitude of the teacher. They seemed bored and lacked initiative to respond altogether. • Student’s attitude in lesson two – on the other hand seemed very much alive to the teacher’s teaching as they participated all along and responded with full interest. They also took initiative in solving various assignments given to them. They were conscious to the teacher’s friendly attitude as they responded well in learning the verbs and modals effortlessly. Student participation: • Student participation in lesson one – was totally absent as they sat dully and unresponsive. They lacked interest totally in the lesson and simply repeated what the teacher was saying. They did not take any initiative in answering any of the teacher’s questions. • Student
participation in lesson two – was very much there as they seemed very interested in the lesson and learning new concepts. They participated all along and responded well to the teacher in answering to all his calls. They were able to solve the exercises accurately and with full interest. The teacher’s voice (clarity, complexity, speed etc): • The teacher’s speech (clarity, complexity and speed) in lesson one – was clear though but very complicated and too fast for a level of this kind to understand. He did not bother or wait to get feedback and proceeded quickly to the new concept without explaining the earlier one. • The teacher’s speech (clarity, complexity and speed) in lesson two – was very much clear, easy to follow and the students were able to comprehend whatever was being taught unlike the teacher in lesson one. He took special care to see that the students understand his tone and are able to follow his teaching all along. He was successful in maintaining his teaching pace with the student’s knowledge. The teacher’s instructions and explanations: • Teacher’s instructions and explanations in lesson one – were not at all clear and matching with the learner’s pace. He seemed to move very quickly to the next concept
without even bothering to find out whether his students are following his teaching. He came straight to the study phase without initiating a prior engage phase to develop his student’s interest. As a result his students were at a complete loss to follow his instructions. • Teacher’s instructions and explanations in lesson two – on the other hand were very clear and matched with the learner’s level of knowledge. He ensured that his students are able to follow the basic concept of verb first before moving on to the more complex modal verbs. His instructions were well followed all along as the student interest never diminished throughout his teaching. Monitoring of the students: • Monitoring of the students in lesson one – was totally absent in lesson one as the teacher sat dully and aimlessly on his seat, when he should have been supervising or closely monitoring his students. He seemed very disinterested in his teaching and the tasks he gave to his students. • Monitoring of students in lesson two – was very good as the teacher was very much aware of his students, and closely watched their work while they sat performing their task. At no point he sat aimlessly at his desk like the teacher in lesson two, which made the class feel very dull. In
comparison to this, class in lesson two students were all attentive due to the teacherÂ’s watchful attitude.", This unit showed the difference between an effective classroom and an ineffective classroom. The videos gave tremendous insight on what a teacher must do to have an effective classroom. It was very important to get a visual at the difference between an effective classroom and an ineffective classroom. After watching the videos I received a much better clarity on classroom management., Wow! Watching that first lesson was absolutely awful. the teacher seemed to hate his job
