The writing of lesson plans has a number of important functions. 1. An aid to planning 2. A working document 3. A record Although there is no special way in which a plan must be prepared, there are some basic principles: - keep it simple - do not script it - structure it and maintain the structure - write the anticipated times in the margin - check for balance of skills - keep it flexible Before starting a lesson, there are some practical things that can be done to ensure the lesson goes smoothly: - check that you have the lesson plan - run through the lesson plan and make sure you have all materials or equipment needed - check that the equipment works - lay out materials so that can be easily found - arrange seating - board should be clean - be ready to chat to the students as they come in It is recommended that the following be included in the lesson plan: - learner objectives - personal aims - context - teaching aids - anticipated problems - procedure - phase (engage, study, activate) - timing - interaction (T-S, S-S, etc.) - class level - number of students - date and time - teacher's and observer's names It is important to monitor the quality of our lessons to improve our sills and make our classes as enjoyable as possible. An effective way of doing this is to evaluate
the lesson and make notes of what went well and what needs improvement. Some special issues should be considered when planning a sequence of lessons: - flexibility - goals - revision - variety and balance
